How Our RAP Journey Has Transformed Our Team: Personal Stories of Growth and Understanding

What happens when a team genuinely commits to learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures? At Orterra, our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) journey has changed not just how we work but who we are. This is more than a workplace initiative. It’s a personal and collective transformation rooted in listening, learning and respect.

Since moving from our Reflect RAP to our Innovate RAP – officially endorsed by Reconciliation Australia in August 2024 – we’ve seen real change. Our team approaches work, community and culture with greater awareness and purpose.

Here, our people share their personal stories of what reconciliation means to them.

Lindsey: Finding Connection to Country Through New Eyes

Lindsey, from our Admin & Graphic Design team, wasn’t born in Australia. For her the RAP journey has been eye-opening.

“Being part of the RAP has helped me truly appreciate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this land, especially the Yugambeh and Yagara peoples, traditional custodians of Logan where I live.”

The experience helped her better understand the lasting impacts of colonisation. “Reconciliation has been a respectful way for me to learn about Australia’s history. It’s made me listen more closely and think more deeply.”

Lindsey now sees ongoing learning as part of her everyday life. “I look out for opportunities to learn in my community. It’s one small but important way to show respect and keep growing.”

Danica: Strengthening Resolve for Social Justice

Danica, our Graduate Landscape Architect, has found the RAP both inspiring and educational. “The RAP helped me understand the importance of cultural respect and social justice. It strengthened my commitment to creating a fairer future in Australia.”

Through this journey, Danica has deepened her professional values. “I’ve learned how vital it is to acknowledge the history and lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Small actions from individuals can lead to meaningful change.”

Her design work has also evolved. “I now see the need for inclusive practices that reflect and empower diverse communities. This journey has inspired me to keep listening and learning.”

Isabel: Transforming Landscape Architecture Practice

For Isabel, a Landscape Architect, the RAP has reshaped her design process. “Being part of the RAP has changed how I approach my projects. I slow down, listen more, and ask questions to understand the cultural significance of a place.”

That awareness has made her work more thoughtful. “Every project is a chance to do better. The RAP reminds me to design spaces that are not only functional and beautiful but also culturally respectful.”

Her journey shows how reconciliation can strengthen both design outcomes and community impact.

The Ripple Effect: Beyond Individual Growth

What started as individual learning has grown into a shared team mindset.

Each team member’s commitment to listening and reflection has shaped how we collaborate, design, and build community relationships. Our RAP is more than a document – it’s a foundation for real change.

As we continue our Innovate RAP, we’re excited to keep growing together.

A Future Built on Respect and Connection

The stories from Lindsey, Danica, and Isabel show how reconciliation starts with individuals and grows into something greater. At Orterra, we’re proud of the transformation our RAP has sparked and we remain committed to walking this path with respect and purpose.
