In the world of residential landscape design, each project presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. This case study of Nelson Street explores the transformation of a rebuilt home. Full of memories into a new updated harmonious and functional outdoor haven for the family. From initial consultation to final implementation, we delve into the various stages of this landscape design.
Our clients were rebuilding their home after it burnt down. As you can imagine there were many memories within the garden and some of the structure and planting was there for us to work from. From the initial consultation, our clients were clear that they had very specific aims for achieving their dream outdoor space. These included not only the functionality of the outdoor space, but was broken down into the unique character qualities of both the back garden and front garden areas.

Overall Outdoor Space
- Create a garden that celebrates and integrates with the newly built home which suits the family now and into the future
- Create an outdoor space that is inviting and draws you out into the garden
- Ensure easy maintenance
Back Garden
- Our clients dream was to walk outside and feel like they are on a tropical holiday.
- Retain and highlight some of the existing mature vegetation
- Improve the existing pool and firepit areas in the back garden
- Increase privacy and a feeling of seclusion within the back garden
Front Garden
- Create a formal entry through the creation of an archway or structure to the front of the property
- Create a coastal feel to the front garden with the incorporation of Pandanus feature trees
- Maintain vehicle and maintenance access through the front garden
After consultation, our first step was to analyse the existing features of the site such as checking site lines, soil quality, sun exposure and the locations and quality of existing vegetation and hardscaping features. While the front garden was almost bear there was a large amount of existing vegetation the family wanted to retain in the rear garden.
From our analysis we were able to outline the concept for the design. With a revitalisation of the firepit and pool area by interplanting various layers of subtropical plants in amongst the existing vegetation would create the subtropical lush feeling whilst providing additional screening to neighbouring buildings and surrounding fences.
The pull of the outside from within the house was seen throughout various elements of the design. Each viewpoint to the outdoors was met with lush greenery and focal elements. Such as the Pandanus tree was of particular importance as it not only created a focal point right through the home, with hints to the lush greenery and subtropical oasis beyond, but it was used as an interconnected feature that tied both the front and back gardens together.
The addition of the crisp white timber front fencing and archway tied the existing character of the newly refurbished home and created structure and formalisation to the entry. But it was the integration of soft coastal planting with pops of yellow flowers with the yellow front door that created a seamless entry way to the home.
Conceptual Design: Merging Aesthetics and Functionality
The conceptual design phase involved translating the client’s vision and the site’s characteristics into a cohesive plan. Elements such as plant selection, hardscape features, and outdoor structures were carefully integrated to create a unified and aesthetically pleasing design. Key consideration was the inclusion of both subtropical and coastal planting options, textural and colour selections of hardscape features and creation of focal points throughout the garden.

Detailed Planning: Turning Vision into Reality
With the conceptual design approved, detailed planning commenced. This involved creating construction drawings, specifying materials and plant selection, and refining the project timeline. Attention to detail in this phase was crucial to ensure a smooth implementation process and to prevent any unexpected challenges.
Implementation: Bringing the Design to Life
The transformation from paper to reality began with site preparation and the installation of hardscape elements by a skilled landscape construction team. With the detailed planting plans and our assistance in plant procurement and delivery, this enabled the owners to plant all the new planting within the garden with careful consideration given to spacing, soil preparation, and long-term maintenance requirements.
Final Touches: Personalising the Space

Once the major elements were in place, the final touches were added by the clients to personalize the space. A stand out element of the overall design was the refurbishment of an existing feature screen to the outdoor dining area, this not only added character and interest to the area, but incorporated a special personal piece for the clients.
Project Completion: A Transformed Oasis
The completed residential landscape design exceeded the client’s expectations. The once underutilized backyard was now a vibrant and welcoming oasis. The new garden reflects the client’s wishes enabling outdoor entertainment and relaxation spaces that seamlessly integrate with the surroundings. With an entry space that highlights the character of the home.
This residential landscape design case study highlights the importance of a holistic approach. From understanding the client’s vision to working with the natural characteristics of the site. The successful transformation of this suburban garden serves as a testament to the power of thoughtful planning, collaboration, and skilled execution.
