We often get asked by our clients what is your design philosophy? So, today I wanted to dive a bit deeper into this question of design philosophy and what it means to us here at Orterra.
Places People Love
That is our philosophy. It is that simple. But what I will do is break it down for you a little more to get to the core of this statement. A philosophy is
“a particular system of beliefs, values, and principles.”
We here at Orterra have very clear values here that we work from that underpin our design philosophy.
- Equality
- Inclusion
- Empathy
- Diversity
- Biodiversity
- Transparency
We use these as a guide when working with our clients, guiding our designs, and interacting with our colleagues. We consider each of these values when we take on a project and how we can ensure that we are considering them at each step of the way. But how do they relate to you, our clients? How does this transfer to a good design that you will be happy with? There are several things we do when working with you.
Listen
The most important part of the design process is listening to you our clients. What you want and need to make the space a place you love. This is different for each of you. This part of the process is about us understanding of what each wants to achieve.
Look
The next part of this is looking at where the clients want us to design this space. We work all over Queensland. Cairns is very different of Brisbane and Quilpie is completely different to both. We need to look at your site. To understand what will work and what will not. We will also tell you if that is not suitable for the site or conditions. We do not suggest things that cannot be constructed on your site.
Create
We combine your wants and needs with your site to create a space that is suitable for you, your purpose, and your requirements. This is distinctly different for each client. If you have a look at some of our work. You will see just that.
Another question I often get asked is what is your style? I hate this question. Because for us the design process is not about our style, it is about you. Not me, because you as our client are the ones who is going to be living, breathing, using,
Brenda Laurel has a quote that I have loved for years it is;
“A design isn’t finished until someone is using it.” and maintaining this space.
It is so true, what is the point of us designing somewhere if there is no one to enjoy it. What is the point if our clients don’t like it? So, this leads us back to the beginning of this blog our tagline the place that started it all.
