From Passion to Practice: What Makes Orterra a Unique Place to Work

At Orterra, our team is at the heart of everything we do. We are a group of passionate, driven individuals who are dedicated to creating landscapes that not only enhance the environment but also bring joy to the people who use them. From administration to design, every role within our team plays a crucial part in shaping the places we create. But what is it really like to work at Orterra? Here’s what our team members have to say.

Lindsey – The Organisational Backbone

As Orterra’s administrative assistant, Lindsey ensures everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. She loves supporting the team, knowing that her work helps bring their designs to life. “It feels good to play a part in making those designs a reality for our clients, even if it’s behind the scenes,” she says.

She is inspired by the impact that Orterra’s projects have on communities and the environment and she finds pride in witnessing the company’s growth. With a strong passion for outdoor spaces – especially as a parent who values time outside for her kids – Lindsey appreciates working with a team dedicated to sustainability and creating places that matter. “There’s a real sense of support here, not just for the business’s success but for each individual as well.”

Isabel – The Nature-Loving Designer

Isabel’s journey into landscape architecture began with a deep appreciation for architecture and nature, fostered during her childhood in Tasmania. “I grew up spending lots of time outdoors and in my grandma’s garden, which was showcased in Better Homes and Gardens. That really shaped my love for landscape design.”

She enjoys seeing designs evolve into thriving landscapes where people and nature coexist harmoniously. One of her favourite projects, the LORDS Primary Playground, stands out for its innovative play elements that make her wish she were a child again! “How lucky are the students to have giant towers, big slides, climbing pyramids, and trampolines in their school playground!”

Isabel values the variety of projects at Orterra, from residential to commercial and school landscapes, as they challenge and inspire her. She also enjoys the camaraderie within the office – especially when Groot, Debbie’s dog, is around to lighten the mood! “There’s never a dull moment here, and that makes coming to work every day something to look forward to.”

Danica – The Passionate Environmentalist

Danica’s passion for landscape architecture was sparked by her love for gardening and permaculture. She was inspired by the idea that outdoor spaces could be designed with both function and sustainability in mind. “I love that I can combine my passion for art, design, and the natural environment to create meaningful spaces,” she says.

At Orterra, she loves seeing her designs come to life and witnessing the positive impact they have on both people and nature. She takes pride in working on school projects that benefit not only current students but future generations as well. “There’s such a far-reaching impact when it comes to the communities that surround each of these schools – it’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of that.”

Danica also cherishes being part of an all-female team, where support and encouragement are always present, fostering both personal and professional growth. “Having the encouragement and support of such a close group of female colleagues is a comfort and joy to be around every day.”

A Workplace That Fosters Growth and Innovation

What sets Orterra apart is the culture of collaboration and continuous learning. Our team values biodiversity, sustainability and the creation of meaningful spaces. Whether it’s through school projects that shape young minds or community spaces that promote social connection, everyone at Orterra is working towards a shared vision of a greener, more inclusive future.

“Orterra sets the bar pretty high. There’s always great conversations happening in the office, and we’re always working on different types of projects. The variety keeps the work fresh and exciting, helping us grow as designers,” Isabel shares.

Working at Orterra means being part of a workplace that truly values people – both within the team and in the communities we serve. From the excitement of winning a new project to the satisfaction of seeing designs come to life, every team member plays an essential role in shaping the landscapes of tomorrow.
