Meet Orterra Home: Whole Home Design in Brisbane, Inside and Out

A home is more than the building sitting on your block.

It is the view from the kitchen window, the patch of lawn where the children play, the cool place you retreat to on a summer afternoon and the outdoor table where everyone gathers for dinner.

It is the way you move from one space to another. The way sunlight enters the house. The trees that provide shade, the garden that creates privacy and the small details that make everyday life easier.

This is the thinking behind Orterra Home.

Orterra Home is a Brisbane residential design studio helping homeowners create thoughtful, beautiful and practical homes, inside and out. We bring architecture, interiors, landscape design and outdoor living together to create one connected design vision for your whole property.

Why we created Orterra Home

Orterra has been designing residential gardens and outdoor spaces across Brisbane and South East Queensland for many years.

Through this work, we noticed something important.

The best homes are created when the house and garden are considered together from the beginning.

Too often, a home is designed first and the landscape is left until the end. By that stage, the doors and windows have been positioned, the pool has been placed, retaining walls are underway and much of the budget has already been committed.

The garden is then expected to solve everything that was overlooked.

It needs to provide privacy, create shade, manage drainage, connect different levels, soften the building, screen the neighbours, accommodate children and pets, make space for entertaining and bring the whole property together.

That is a great deal to ask of a few leftover garden beds.

We created Orterra Home because we believe homeowners deserve a more connected approach.

What is whole home design?

Whole home design considers the house, interiors, garden and outdoor spaces as parts of one place.

Instead of treating each area as a separate project, we look at how they relate to one another and how they can collectively support the way you want to live.

This can include:

  • Architecture and home renovations
  • Interior spaces and finishes
  • Landscape and garden design
  • Pools, courtyards and outdoor entertaining
  • Access, movement and connections
  • Privacy, shade and views
  • Planting, biodiversity and habitat
  • Adaptable and accessible home design

A whole home design approach does not mean everything needs to be changed at once. It means the decisions made today are guided by a clear understanding of what the entire property could become.

You might build the project in stages over several years. With a considered plan in place, each stage can contribute to the same long term vision.

Why design your house and garden together?

When the house and garden are designed separately, valuable opportunities can be missed.

A beautiful kitchen may have no meaningful connection to the garden. A new deck may receive the full force of the western sun. A pool may dominate the backyard rather than becoming part of it. A planting plan may look lovely on paper but fail to address privacy, drainage or the realities of family life.

At Orterra Home, we begin with the whole property.

We consider how the home sits on the land, where the light falls, how breezes move through the site, which views should be celebrated and which ones should be screened. We look at existing trees, levels, access, soil, water, privacy and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Most importantly, we look at how you want to live.

A home designed around your life

Every household is different, which means every Orterra Home project begins with listening.

We want to understand what you love about your home, what frustrates you and what you hope life there could feel like.

You may need spaces that work for small children now and teenagers later. You might be planning for ageing parents, changing mobility needs or a home that will support you as you grow older. You may want a productive garden, a pool, a studio, more room for entertaining or simply a quiet place to sit at the end of the day.

Good design should respond to your life. It should not ask your life to fit around it.

Whether you are renovating an older house, planning an extension, building a new home or transforming a garden that has never quite worked, we can help you understand the possibilities and develop a clear way forward.

Thoughtful design for Brisbane homes

Designing a home in Brisbane means responding to a subtropical climate.

Shade, airflow, orientation, planting and water all influence how comfortable a property feels. A well positioned tree can cool a room. A covered outdoor space can become somewhere the family uses throughout the year. The right planting can provide privacy without making the home feel enclosed.

Our background in landscape architecture means the land is never treated as an afterthought.

We consider the slope, soil, drainage, vegetation, climate and wider setting alongside the needs of the building. This allows the architecture and landscape to work together, creating spaces that feel connected, comfortable and appropriate for their location.

What Orterra Home stands for

We believe homes should be beautiful, but beauty alone is not enough.

A well designed home should also be practical, comfortable and resilient. It should make good use of its site, respond to the climate and continue to support the people who live there as their lives change.

We believe in honest advice and thoughtful decision making. Our role is to help you understand what is possible, where your investment will have the greatest impact and how the different parts of your project can work together.

We believe in practical beauty. Every design decision should have a reason, whether it improves comfort, creates privacy, supports family life, welcomes nature or simply brings you joy.

We also believe in designing with nature rather than treating it as decoration. Trees, plants, shade, water, soil and habitat all contribute to how a home looks, feels and performs. They can cool a property, support biodiversity and strengthen the connection between people and the natural world.

A home does not need to be enormous or extravagant to be special. Clever planning, meaningful connections and a clear understanding of what matters to you can transform even a small or challenging property.

Who does Orterra Home work with?

Orterra Home works with homeowners across Brisbane and South East Queensland who are planning:

  • Home renovations and extensions
  • Garden transformations
  • Pools and outdoor living spaces
  • Interior improvements
  • Accessible or adaptable home modifications
  • A staged plan for their whole property

Some clients come to us with a clear idea of what they want. Others simply know their current home is not working and need help deciding what to do next.

Both are good places to begin.

Our role is to listen, identify the opportunities and help you make informed decisions before time and money are committed to construction.

Creating places people love

We want Orterra Home to create places people genuinely love.

Homes where children can explore and play. Gardens that change with the seasons. Rooms that open naturally to the outdoors. Spaces that welcome friends, offer moments of quiet and make daily routines feel a little easier.

We want to design Brisbane homes that are connected to their landscapes, responsive to the climate and ready to evolve with the people who live in them.

Most of all, we want you to feel at home in every part of your property.

When the house, garden and people who live there are considered together, a home becomes more than a collection of rooms and outdoor spaces.

It becomes one connected place, shaped around you.
